Time has run out on Western United’s bid for a second straight finals appearance. But they can still put a major dent in Macarthur FC’s hopes of repeating their feat in qualifying for the post-season on A-League debut.
The latest Melbourne lockdown has played into Macarthur’s hands somewhat, though, with the Monday night showdown moved to Leichhardt Oval.
Tenth-placed Western United were well on track for the playoffs at the end of April, winning eight and drawing four of their first 18 games. But the sophomore club have inexplicably lost six straight – outscored 20-2 in the process.

Macarthur FC are sixth with a couple of teams breathing down their necks. But a win here would catapult them into fourth position.
The Bulls’ six-match unbeaten streak (two wins, four draws) was halted at home to Central Coast Mariners on Thursday, edged 2-1 after scoring first through Markel Suasaeta.
The ledger is square between the clubs after two encounters. Western United romped to a 4-1 victory in Ballarat in February, with Besart Berisha scoring a goal in each half.
But Macarthur hit back with a 2-1 win in Campbelltown in March. Matt Derbyshire scored for the Bulls in both games.
Macarthur would seem rather short as $2.00 favourites. But Western United’s form has fallen away so dramatically that the Bulls shape as a Best of the Day lock to get the three points – particularly with so much at stake.
