Wests Tigers vs Newcastle Knights Preview

Wests Tigers and Newcastle Knights are both coming off deflating losses to fellow 2022 bottom-four finishers, magnifying the importance of this Sunday afternoon showdown at Leichhardt Oval.

The Knights were in their match against the Warriors until the latter stages but couldn’t build pressure, lost the yardage battle, were ill-disciplined and regularly looked lost on attack in a 20-12 defeat.

Kalyn Ponga’s shift to five-eighth shows early promise, while they had the misfortune to lose Tyson Frizell early and Ponga when he was threatening to put the Knights back in front late.

Frizell will need to pass protocols and Adam Elliott is out but Dane Gagai is a handy backline addition.

The Tigers were a frustrating watch in front of sellout home crowd last Sunday, crashing 22-10 to the Titans.

It’s unclear whether the Tigers have the cattle to effectively employ Tim Sheens’ expansive style, while their attack inside the 20-metre zone was woeful aside from Adam Doueihi’s contribution.

Alex Seyfarth replaces Fonua Pole (knee) amid some shuffling between the starting pack and the bench, while Shawn Blore (concussion) will be monitored.

Newcastle came away with two wins against Wests Tigers in 2022: an emphatic 26-4 result at home in Round 2 and a tense 14-10 victory at Campbelltown in Round 21.

The latter is the Knights’ only win in their last 10 NRL games, while the Tigers have won only one of their last 14 premiership matches.

I couldn’t go out on a limb to back either of these teams under any circumstances, narrow favourites here, the Tigers’ record at Leichhardt (three wins from their last 11) is becoming a psychological barrier.

Neither side looks to have many points in them at present and the under may be the best bet available.
