A number of scenarios could determine if the Socceroos advance in the World Cup, but the bottom line is that Australia must beat Peru to be a chance of advancing to the last 16 teams.
Sportsbet has priced Australia as the slight outsiders at $2.95 to beat Peru ($2.45). A draw, as good as a loss for the Socceroos, is $3.30.
If the Socceroos win they then need France ($2.25) to beat Denmark ($4.50) for their hopes to stay alive, and even then goal difference could come into play.
The online bookmaker has also drawn up a list of prices for possible outcomes:
- Australia win by 2 or more goals, Denmark lose and Australia qualify for round of 16 – $9.00.
- Australia win 1-0, Demark lose to nil and Australia qualify for round of 16 – $17.
- Australia qualify for the round of 16 via the fair play rule – $67.
- Denmark to qualify for the round of 16 via the fair play rule – $101.
- Australia qualify for the round of 16 via the drawing of lots – $251.
- Denmark qualify for the round of 16 via the drawing of lots – $252.
“If Australia finish level, on points, with Denmark then the various tie-breaking scenarios come into play. But really it’s a case of go hard or go home for the Socceroos when they tackle Peru,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Ella Zampatti.
