Port Adelaide Power vs Geelong Cats Preview

It will be Groundhog Day for the Power and Cats on Thursday night as they meet in the Qualifying Final for the second year in a row.

Port overcame Geelong by 16 points when they met at the Adelaide Oval last year and they will again go into Week 1 of the finals as favourites against the out of sorts Cats.

The Power momentarily sat atop the ladder last week following their nail-biting two-point win over the Dogs but eventually had to settle for second following Melbourne’s victory over Geelong.

Chris Scott’s side managed to blow a seven-goal half-time lead before losing on the siren to Max Gawn, a performance that has cast plenty of doubt over the Cats’ chances of returning to the Grand Final.

Geelong did get some revenge on Port with a 21-point victory back in Round 13, but it’s fair to say a lot has changed since then.

Having held their last three opponents to under 70 points, the Power have been very tough to score against in recent weeks, while the Cats have shown a tendency to switch off during various stages of the game.

Putting all that aside for moment, this does look to be a potential trap game for punters.

The Cats have won seven of their last eight off the back of a loss, while it’s hard to forget Jeremy Cameron, Tom Hawkins and Gary Rohan combining for 12 goals against the Power back in June.

The scary part for Port fans is the fact Geelong kicked 10 behinds that night, so if the Cats can manage to string together four quarters again, this could turn into a long night for the Power back line.
