The Pies can move one step closer to playing September footy on Saturday when they take on the Crows in Adelaide.
It wasn’t pretty, but Craig McRae’s side managed to pull out all the stops last week to erase a 26-point deficit over spoon favourites North Melbourne.
Nobody is expecting the Pies to win the flag this year, but for a club that finished second-last on the ladder only 12 months ago, it’s fair to say this has been one of the most impressive season-to-season turnarounds in the game’s history.
Ask any coach, however, and they’ll tell you the home/away season is a marathon, not a sprint, and nobody will be stressing that more than McRae over these final six weeks.
For as good as Collingwood’s pressure was in the final term last week, they’ve now suffered three close calls in as many weeks against GWS, Gold Coast, and North.
Many are beginning to wonder if a loss is due, and even though the Crows have been plucky at times, it’s hard to imagine Adelaide beating a top-eight side, or maybe even winning another game this year.
The Crows were blown out of the water very early last week against Hawthorn as key forward Mitch Lewis enjoyed plenty of the footy early, while Adelaide’s own scoring has dried up with two straight games of under 65 points.
Adelaide disposed of North Melbourne rather easily just three weeks ago, but they’ve also struggled to defend imposing forwards – something that doesn’t bode well against the likes of Brody Mihocek and potentially, Jordan deGoey.
To make matters worse, the Crows have lost five in a row to Collingwood dating back to 2018, making any kind of Adelaide upset a tough sell.
