Brisbane Broncos vs St. George Illawarra Dragons Preview
Believe it or not, Brisbane and St George Illawarra are separated by just two points on the NRL ladder. The burgeoning Broncos are in fifth after tough but nevertheless encouraging away losses to top-four sides Melbourne (32-20) and North Queensland (40-26) either side of the rep weekend.
Leaking that many points is a clear concern for Kevin Walters heading into the home stretch – but racking up four tries (with Corey Oates bagging consecutive doubles) against two of the NRL’s best defences is a positive.
The Dragons have climbed to eighth with four wins from their last five matches, backing up their first-half blitz to upset Souths 32-12 with a controversial-but-gritty 12-10 eclipse of the Raiders in Wollongong.
The Broncos lose Patrick Carrigan, Kurt Capewell, Selwyn Cobbo and Thomas Flegler to the Queensland side, while Payne Haas was ruled out of the decider with injury. Compounding matters, Te Maire Martin and Corey Jensen are also sidelined.
Tesi Niu returns at fullback, Jordan Pereira comes onto a wing, Keenan Palasia and Ryan James form a new prop pairing, Zac Hosking will debut in the second-row and Cory Paix, Rhys Kennedy, Xavier Wilson and Tyson Gamble make up an all-new interchange.
The Dragons’ only Origin absentee is a big one: linchpin Ben Hunt. Jayden Sullivan will wear the No.7 in an inexperienced halves pairing with Talatau Amone.
The Saints are on a five-match winning streak against the Broncos, culminating in a 52-24 beatdown at Jubilee Oval in their sole encounter last season after three straight victories at Suncorp Stadium. Each of the clubs’ last five encounters produced at least 46 points.
The Dragons have been abysmal away from Sydney since their season-opening defeat of the Warriors on the Sunshine Coast, losing three interstate games by a combined 93 points to 34. Where their playmaking impetus and direction comes from is the major worry here, though, and Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam should lead the significantly depleted hosts to a key win.
