Brisbane Lions vs Richmond Tigers Preview
There will be a familiar feeling at the Gabba on Thursday night with the Lions and Tigers once again meeting in September.
Brisbane’s first finals win in over a decade came against Richmond back in 2019, but the Tigers have held the Lions’ number in recent times with victories in each of the last two seasons.
Damien Hardwick’s men prevailed by seven points only six weeks ago at the MCG, a game that saw Tom Lynch and up-and-coming star, Noah Cumberland, combine for a whopping nine goals.
Both clubs have embarked on different paths to the finals, and it’s fair to say Richmond is the team with the more promising form heading into the pointy end of the season.
The Tigers rattled off four straight wins to finish seventh on the ladder, while a blowout loss to the Dees two weeks ago at home put an exclamation point on Brisbane’s free fall from the top four.
Superstar midfielder Dustin Martin is set to make his return to the field following a recent absence, but the inclusion of No. 4 isn’t the only reason the Tigers find themselves as slight favourites in betting.
The legitimacy of Brisbane’s finals credentials has been under fire for the better part of two months, with scoring inefficiency, problems down back, and a complete lack of toughness to blame.
The disappearance of Joe Daniher and Charlie Cameron up forward was also at the forefront against Melbourne two weeks ago, not to mention Brisbane’s recent failures in big, high-pressure games of late.
It’s tough to find confidence in the Lions with all those problems in mind, but if there has been one constant during the Chris Fagan era, it’s Brisbane bouncing back.
The Lions haven’t lost back-to-back games in over 12 months, while it’s easy to forget this is the same Richmond side that lost to wooden spooners North Melbourne six weeks ago.
Finding an answer to Tom Lynch has to be at the top of Fagan’s priority list this week, while the Lions can also benefit from playing their brand of footy – rather than playing for free kicks and trying to get under the skin of their opponents like we saw against the Dees.
With the Gabba crowd also a factor, a week off might be just what the Lions needed.
