The Canterbury Stakes is always an intriguing race and we’re set for another exciting edition of the Group 1 contest at Randwick on Saturday.
Some of the country’s best sprinters have been confirmed for a start and there is a legitimate case to be made for most finding their way into the winner’s stall, ultimately making for an outstanding betting race.
CANTERBURY STAKES – WINNER
No. 7 Standout – Bet Now: $2.40
As his name suggests, this three-year-old son of Exceed And Excel has stamped himself as a colt to follow during his short racing career and the Canterbury Stakes looks the perfect Group 1 race for him. Standout recorded a smart win on debut at Gosford in August and has continued to improve with each start as Gerald Ryan has raised the bar. He won the Listed Heritage Stakes and finished second in the Group 2 Roman Consul during the Spring Racing Carnival, but has clearly gone to another level this campaign and beat an excellent field with complete ease in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes first-up, of which many of those opponents will be lining up in this. I like that he’s had a trial in the lead-up to the Canterbury Stakes and he will truly take a power of beating.
CANTERBURY STAKES – 2ND
No. 4 Alizee – Bet Now: $3.50
Alizee remains one of the headline horses of the in-form Godolphin Australia operation and she is up to recording another Group 1 win in the 2020 Canterbury Stakes. Her overall record and prizemoney amassed through 26 career starts speaks for itself and you really don’t need me to remind you of the highlights, but importantly she has returned to the track in typically sharp form this time, having finished second to Standout first-up before winning the Group 2 Apollo last time out. She’ll take further improvement into this race.
CANTERBURY STAKES – 3RD
No. 2 The Bostonian – Bet Now: $15.00
The Bostonian is a talented sprinter and would not look out of place in the Canterbury Stakes winner’s stall. The Kiwi raider has enjoyed several lucrative trips to Australian throughout his twenty-one-start career, of course none better than his winter preparation last year that returned consecutive wins in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup. His fresh record currently stands at 6:5-0-0 and he simply cannot be ignored in Canterbury Stakes betting.
CANTERBURY STAKES – 4TH
No. 6 White Moss – Bet Now: $41.00
White Moss has been a star for the Jason Coyle yard for several seasons now, but she appears to have returned to the races in particularly slick form this time and is up to fighting out the finish of the Canterbury Stakes 2020. The striking mare has recorded several black type victories during her twenty-one career starts and has returned two competitive efforts to place in the Expressway and Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes this time in. For mine, she looks to be the ‘best of the rest’.
