Carlton Blues vs Collingwood Magpies Preview
A full house is expected at the ‘G on Sunday for a game many fans have had circled for months.
The Blues suffered a heart-breaking loss last week to Melbourne in the final seconds, but they still stand a chance at playing finals if they can take care of business this week against the Pies.
Collingwood also has plenty to play for – a win guaranteeing the Pies a top-four spot in Craig McRae’s first season as coach.
There’s a long list of storylines and history worth delving into, but from a pure betting standpoint, this is easily one of the toughest games to try and tip of not just the round, but the entire season.
Collingwood has only been an average bounce-back bet over the last 12 months, playing to a 4-3 record head to head and a 3-4 record at the line.
Carlton, meanwhile, has been much more profitable, playing to a 7-2 record in both markets.
The Blues’ chances have taken a hit with midfielder Matthew Kennedy done for the rest of the season, but Carlton fans can rest somewhat easier knowing Jordan de Goey won’t play the final game of the season.
Jack Ginnivan’s status is also up in the air with the young star coming out at half-time last week in the loss to Sydney with a hamstring complaint.
The Pies still have plenty of talent up forward, but on paper, the Blues hold the upper-hand with Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay both looking to make an impact.
Carlton’s lack of composure cost them last week, which is to be expected from a young side that has done very little winning over the last few seasons.
The Blues will take plenty of lessons away from that game, and it’s now on leaders like Patrick Cripps, Sam Docherty, and Adam Saad to steer the ship with the season on the line.
To add further spice, Collingwood won a four-point thriller in one of the games of the season back in Round 11, a result Carlton fans still haven’t forgotten.
This game is nothing more than a coin-flip, but if the Blues can bring the same pressure they applied to Melbourne in the fourth quarter last week, and also rely on a bag of goals from Curnow or McKay, they should be able to keep this fairytale season alive.
