Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton is once again the favourite and is hoping to join fellow countrymen Jenson Button by becoming a three-time winner at this event.
Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas poses the biggest threat after winning in Melbourne for the first time last year, setting up what could be a close race to the finish on one of the tightest tracks of the season.
Mercedes won back-to-back-to-back races at Albert Park between 2014-16 and it feels as though they are heading for another dominant run if all things go to plan.
Preseason is often a good indication as to how the Australian Grand Prix will play out, and by all accounts, the silver and green colours have every right to feel confident.
Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will be chock-full of confidence heading into the new season with a chance to tie Michael Schumacher’s record seven world championship crowns.
Meanwhile, teammate Valtteri Bottas also has his sights set on opening his account with a win after finishing 20 seconds quicker than Hamilton on this last year.
Speaking of times, Bottas clocked the fastest lap of the two Mercedes cars during February’s testing – casting a few questions as to who takes precedence this weekend.
Bottas clocked the fastest lap at Albert Park last year and also did well to take the lead from Hamilton after qualifying second. It’s a two-horse race, but it’s worth keeping in mind Mercedes has produced back-to-back winners at this Grand Prix before.
