Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos Preview
The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles are starting to get to their best following a convincing 36-22 win over the Tigers. Surprisingly, the Brisbane Broncos may have finally clicked. Their 32-12 win over the Rabbitohs is arguably Brisbane’s best win of the Kevin Walters era.
Haumole Olakau’atu is back for the Sea Eagles with Ben Trbojevic and Ethan Bullemor keeping their spots. Andrew Davey is back on the bench while Josh Schuster is in the reserves. Meanwhile, the Broncos have Payne Haas and Kurt Capewell back this week. After making so many good decisions in recent weeks, Kevin Walters has named Patrick Carrigan at lock and moved Kobe Hetherington to the bench.
While the Sea Eagles aren’t hitting the heights of the 2021 NRL season, they’re proving to be one of the more consistent teams in the competition right now. Meanwhile, the Broncos have won three on the bounce to possibly signal a turning point in their fortunes following four years of struggle. Played at Suncorp but with the Sea Eagles the official home side, this one shapes up as a beauty. Like last week, the Broncos matchup well defensively. They ask teams to go around them and trust the jamming defence on the edge to close down shifts more often than not. Manly is a side that likes to move the ball wide and find space down the edges. The best way to beat the jamming defence is to dominate the middle of the field and play on the front foot. Keep the defence moving backwards and make it more difficult to jam in. While the Sea Eagles out-gain the Broncos in yardage, it’s only by 40 metres and Walters welcomes back metre-eater Payne Haas for this one. Adam Reynolds is in superb form and has proven he can lead the team and manufacture points if the foundations are laid before him. Even in the middle and playing with their best defence since Wayne Bennett’s departure, the Broncos are set up well to extend their winning streak to four games on Friday night.
