Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Sixers Preview
Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers square off in Geelong after their New Year’s Day clash at Coffs Harbour was washed out.
The 6-3-1 Sixers have slipped to third place after losing their last two games. The 3-6-1 Renegades are sixth and started 2022 in fine style…before sinking to a massive defeat on the weekend.
The Sixers have not won since December 29. The defending champs lost to the Scorchers (late replacements for the COVID-stricken Heat) by 10 runs on the Gold Coast January 4 and by five wickets at Coffs Harbour on Sunday.
Several Sixers made starts in the latter defeat as they reached 4/151. Dan Christian (35* off 20) and Josh Philippe (32 off 22) were among five batters to make 23 or more. But the Scorchers mowed down the target with an over to spare. The Sixers were without Sean Abbott and Moises Henriques, while James Vince has returned to England and Steve O’Keefe is again on the injured list.
Rallying Renegades come back to earth
Following back-to-back five-wicket wins over the Stars and Heat – spurred by half-centuries from Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh, respectively – the ’Gades sunk to a 129-run loss to the Thunder on Saturday. Will Sutherland (1/23) was their only bowler to go for less than nine an over as the Thunder racked up 7/209. The Renegades were skittled for 80 in the 15th over, with James Seymour (25 off 23) top-scoring.
Leg-spinner Cameron Boyce joins the squad as he looks to play his first game since BBL|09 after a rough run health-wise. It’s a welcome boost with James Pattinson and Mohammad Nabi out for the rest of the season.
The table-topping Sixers won both clashes with the wooden-spoon Renegades during BBL|10. The first was a 145-run obliteration in Hobart, with Josh Philippe (95 off 57) taking Player of the Match honours and the ’Gades crumbling to 60 all out and Ben Dwarshuis taking 4/13. The Renegades put up a much better showing on the Gold Coast after Shaun Marsh (67 off 48) led them to 6/168. But Philippe (48 off 30) top-scored for the Sixers again before some late heroics from Jason Holder (33* off 18) secured a 2-wicket victory with 1 ball to spare.
Any team with Finch and Marsh in the top order is a chance, but the Renegades are $2.33 underdogs here. Despite a couple of notable absentees, the Sixers’ overall quality and depth should see them bounce back with a much-needed W. Josh Philippe was on fire early in BBL|11 with three 70+ scores in the Sixers’ first four games; he’s averaged less than 14 since but showed good signs on Sunday.
