Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks Preview
Cronulla only needs to win to hold onto second spot and grab a home qualifying final. That shouldn’t be an issue against a struggling Newcastle side that seemingly can’t wait for a ghastly 2022 campaign to end.
The Knights have lost seven of their last eight, leaking more than 30 points per game in defeats to the Broncos, Raiders and Titans in the past three weeks.
Failing to fight back against a Gold Coast team that played with 12 men for half an hour was yet another indictment on Adam O’Brien’s stricken squad.
The Sharks held their opponents to one try or less for the sixth time this season in a 16-0 shutout of the Bulldogs last Saturday.
Ronaldo Mulitalo picked up a double, but their work without the ball was the major positive as the Sharks inched to second in the NRL in the points conceded department.
Anthony Milford (ribs) is replaced in the Knights’ halves by Phoenix Crossland, while Sauaso Sue is also out. Matt Ikuvalu comes back onto the wing for the Sharks’ impressive Round 24 debutant Kayal Iro.
Cronulla put Newcastle away 18-0 at home in Round 4 to end a four-match losing streak in the rivalry. The Sharks last won in the Hunter in 2018.
The Knights will do well to get off nought this Sunday, while the scoreline could get ugly against the firepower-laden Sharks if they aren’t prepared to roll up their sleeves defensively.
