Paul Gallen vs Lucas Browne Preview
Paul Gallen was a bloody good footballer. And Lucas Browne was a bloody good boxer. And that’s exactly what punters are going to see on Wednesday evening at WIN Entertainment Centre. A footballer taking on a boxer.
Both sports require immense physical toughness and at times a complete disregard for self-preservation, perhaps more so than other sport in the modern world. And both athletes have achieved the highest accolades in their respective trades, albeit both plagued at times by performance enhancing substance scandals, but that’s about where the similarities end.
Gal has forged an undefeated boxing career through his eleven fights to date largely by fighting ex-sports stars with poorly managed superannuation funds, whilst Browne has fought 31 times in both hemispheres against international opponents, many of whom were genuine heavyweight title contenders. He himself once holding the coveted WBA title before having it stripped due to a subsequent positive sample.
Gal fights like he played footy. Hard, tough and straight. And at just under six foot he also played above his weight for an international front rower.
But in the 200 pound plus world of professional heavyweight boxing, being able to punch a little bit above your weight doesn’t count for all that much, especially when your being punched in the face by a man six inches taller than you with seven inches more reach.
Being set down for just a six rounder would seem to play into Gallen’s hands given he has never fought in a bought scheduled for any longer however Browne’s record of 29 wins includes 25 KO’s, the majority of which have come before round 6 and the abbreviated Twenty20 six round format of heavyweight fight night will neutralise the fact Browne hasn’t fought professionally for 18 months.
At the end of the day the two C.V.’s and the tale of the tape tell the story. Gal’s best chance is to approach it like the first hit up in an Origin game and they are the tactics he’ll likely adopt. But that is fraught with danger against the ring smarts and the bigger body of Browne and The Wolf thinks it will be to his peril.
Expect Browne to soften him up considerably as Gal tries bullocking forward before he ends things in the first half of the bout. The Wolf’s backing Browne by KO/TKO, plus he’s having a crack at Round 2 at $13’s and a small saver either side on Rounds 1 and 3.
