Richmond Tigers vs Brisbane Lions Preview
The Tigers and the Lions have been involved in some important games over the last few years, and Sunday’s meeting at the ‘G will be no exception.
Brisbane took a big step towards locking up a top-four spot last week with a win over the Suns, but the job is far from over with one of the toughest remaining schedules in the entire competition.
The Lions famously beat the Tigers in a Prelim at the Gabba a couple of years ago, but the sides split their meetings one win apiece last season with respective blowout victories.
As for the Tigers, it’s must-win from here.
Last week’s draw against Fremantle could do more harm than good with the Saints and Dogs all competing for the final spot in the eight, and there’s still no word on whether Tom Lynch or Dustin Martin will make their returns to the side.
Form wise, the Lions do look the much safer bet here, but the fact they haven’t won a game at the MCG is a massive concern for a team that nearly came off second-best to the Suns only a week ago.
Elsewhere, the Lions also have some injury woes with star defender Daniel Rich ruled out with a concussion, while Brisbane’s lack of production up forward is another worry with Eric Hipwood struggling to find form.
Statistically, these two clubs are very similar on paper, but the Lions do own a distinct advantage around the clearances – an area that has been a problem for Chris Fagan at various points this season.
Like the market suggests, this is a very tough game to pick, but if Lynch fails to make it through training, another week of relying on Jack Riewoldt and Shai Bolton doesn’t bode particularly well for the Tigers.
Both teams have plenty to play for, but a win on the big stage – something they failed to achieve against Melbourne five weeks ago – has to be of the utmost importance to Brisbane.
