Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers Preview
Sydney Roosters’ season so far doesn’t feel like 6-4 and fourth on the ladder, but the heavyweights have made some big strides since the ignominy of losing to the Dragons and Bulldogs back-to-back.
The Tricolours’ attack has clicked in victories over the Titans (44-16) and Eels (31-24), with Sam Walker and Luke Keary finding their groove, and James Tedesco and Joey Manu producing the goods as per usual. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was a monster up front as the Roosters held off the Eels.
Penrith responded to its first loss – a 22-20 home defeat to Parramatta – with a 32-6 blowout over a depleted Melbourne. Isaah Yeo and Nathan Cleary were excellent again, but dynamic performances from Jarome Luai and Viliame Kikau were arguably more satisfying takeaways.
Victor Radley is out for the Roosters, with Nat Butcher to start at lock and Lindsay Collins returning from suspension on the bench. The Panthers are unchanged.
The Panthers have won their last four against the Roosters, including a pair of victories in 2021: a 38-12 thumping at Penrith in Round 15 and a 20-14 result at Suncorp Stadium in Round 21.
Penrith boasts the NRL’s best defensive record (11.6 points per game) and the second-best attack (29 points per game). The Roosters at their best, though, are capable of turning this into an absolute barnburner and are a tempting option with a double-digit start coming off a positive fortnight.
