Sydney Swans vs Geelong Cats Preview
We’re back on ‘Buddy Watch’ again this week as the Swans’ superstar looks to join Tony Lockett, Gordon Coventry, Jason Dunstall, Doug Wade, and Gary Ablett Sr on the 1,000 goals list.
Franklin inched closer last week with a goal against arch-rivals GWS, but the big story was the way the Swans stormed home in the fourth quarter to record a very important win.
Sydney won two of the three Derby games last year against GWS but lost the most important one by a single point in the Elimination Final.
A win over a rival is one thing, but to put last year’s disappointment behind them is a big result for the Swans.
As for Geelong, last week’s blowout win over Essendon was just as important.
Plenty questioned whether Geelong were too old to hang in the top four, but those doubts were quickly put to rest with a dominant 66-point win.
Chris Scott vowed at the start of the season that his side will play a totally different brand of footy, and that was on display as the Cats carved up the Bombers from start to finish.
It goes without saying that this is a massive game for many reasons, but from a punting perspective, it’s extremely tough to tip.
The last two games between the Swans and Cats have been decided by no more than a goal, but with Jeremy Cameron in some doubt after suffering a hip injury, the Cats are going to have to rely on Tom Hawkins and Patrick Dangerfield more than they might like.
That combination has paid huge dividends in the past, but the Swans showed last week that they have a forward line capable of beating anyone.
Issac Henney reminded everyone that he’s still one of the best half-forwards in the league, while Ollie Florent and Luke Parker also chipped in with a handful of goals themselves.
The jury remains out on Geelong’s back line after giving up five goals to debutant Nic Martin last week, so there’s a strong chance some of those names we just mentioned prove the difference in this one.
