The world’s best golfers will descend on the Winged Foot Gold Club in Mamaroneck, New York from Friday morning AEST for the 2020 US Open.
We’ve been treated to some terrific tournaments since the sport’s resumption, and with many of the world’s top twenty players finding strong and consistent form recently, this could prove to be one of the best editions of the US Open since the turn of the century.
I’ve run the rule over the field, the course and the odds, and you can find my 2020 US Open best bets, best Aussie hope and the roughies to consider below.
Dustin Johnson ($8.50)
Love him or hate him, Dustin Johnson has been in rare form recently, and he is a fitting occupant of the top line of US Open betting.
The world number one was on track for his second career major win at the PGA Championship early last month before dropping the bundle late and finishing in a tie for second, but he immediately responded with an impressive win at The Northern Trust.
THAT putt forced a playoff with Jon Rahm at the BMW Championship two back, but Johnson will carry all the momentum and plenty of confidence in the US Open following his 21-under win at last week’s Tour Championship.
So long as he holds his form, there really is no reason why Johnson won’t be in the finish at Winged Foot.
Jon Rahm ($11.00)
Rahm is the only player to have consistently kept Johnson honest recently, and he is the world number one’s major threat at the US Open.
The twenty-five-year-old Spaniard just missed out on a top ten finish at the PGA Championship (T13) and has gone from strength in his three tournaments since, beating Johnson in a playoff at the BMW Championship most notably, and finishing fourth at the Tour Championship last week.
Short game is key at Winged Foot, and there arguably isn’t a better one on tour at the moment than Rahm’s.
Rahm’s best result at a major was a tie for third, interestingly at last year’s US Open, but he is playing in career-best form currently and this does represent his best opportunity to date.
Best Aussie Hope
Jason Day ($41.00)
As has been the case more often than not recently, Jason Day represents Australia’s best chance of winning the 2020 US Open, but the $41 available at publish does look to be about the right price.
Day’s season has been inconsistent, but his best performances have been eye-catching, and have included a tie for fourth at the PGA Championship, having led after the first round.
He’d certainly need to pull something out of the hat, but stranger things have happened, and Day does tend to keep his best golf for the big stage.
Roughies To Consider
Tiger Woods ($51.00)
He hasn’t quite found the form that saw him into the Green Jacket at the 2019 Masters, but there are certainly worse bets than Tigers Woods at $51 in literally any tournament at all.
Woods led team USA to the Presidents Cup in December, and while his form since the COVID resumption has been shaky at best, there are few players who will hold their nerve better, should he find himself in the thick of things in the fourth round.
Abraham Ancer ($71.00)
Abraham Ancer has enjoyed the best season of his young career in 2020, and he is sure to return another strong and competitive performance at the US Open.
The twenty-nine-year-old Mexican starred in team world’s losing effort at the Presidents Cup late last year, and he has been a consistent performer since arriving back in the States.
Nothing short of a career-best performance would be required for him to win, but he does look a touch of overs at $71, and I am happy to have a small play at the price.
