Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys Preview
The Wests Tigers are a better team than they were to start the 2022 NRL season but have stalled in their improvements. They never looked like beating the Sea Eagles last week. The North Queensland Cowboys, on the other hand, are exceeding all expectations with their 36-16 win over the Knights making it four in a row.
Luciano Leilua is back for the Tigers as the only change this week. Alex Seyfarth moves to the bench and Thomas Mikaele to the reserves. Similarly, Todd Payten has named an unchanged Cowboys lineup.
The Cowboys just keep turning up and producing the goods on both sides of the ball and the expectation is for them to do it again on Sunday. Capable of playing patient in attack and grinding down the opposition, Scott Drinkwater’s involvement from fullback ensure that Payten’s side can also create something out of nothing. They’ve become one of the best-attacking teams in the NRL over the last few weeks and it started with their improvements in defence. The Tigers have taken a somewhat similar approach to their recent improvements but at a far smaller scale. Better in the effort areas and much-improved with the ball since Jackson Hastings returned from suspension, they’re still a limited football side and rely on individual moments of brilliance to keep up with those towards the top of the ladder. While it’s not a spot many expected the Cowboys to be heading into Round 10 of the NRL season, they are all but certain of featuring in finals football already. Payten won’t allow this group to take it easy. He knows ten good rounds isn’t enough to simply turn up and beat a side at the bottom of the ladder. Far superior in the middle, elite in defence and sure to target the Tigers dodgy left edge defence, in particular, the Cowboys shouldn’t have too many problems on Sunday evening.
